A survey of chemists' attitudes to correcting errors in scientific publications reveals that most prefer informal discussions or private communication with editors.
According to the survey conducted by Frédérique Bordignon, a researcher at the LISIS laboratory, respondents favor quiet corrections, with some even introducing 'errors' into their work to satisfy reviewers.
Mistakes are easily made. How they are dealt with by the scientific community is what matters.
The survey contacted 50,000 corresponding authors of publications in American Chemical Society and Royal Society of Chemistry journals between 2020-2023, with almost a thousand respondents, a 2% response rate.
Bordignon suggests utilizing online platforms and repositories to encourage more public corrections to the scientific record.
