Typhoon Impact on Native Alaska Villages
Native Alaska villages were already experiencing the effects of climate change when Typhoon Halong hit, exacerbating their vulnerability.
The typhoon brought towering wind speeds, record storm surge, and widespread flooding to nearly 50 Alaska Native communities across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. At least one person died, and 1,500 adults and children, mostly Yup’ik, were displaced.
- 90% of homes in the coastal village of Kipnuk were decimated.
- 35% of homes in Kwigillingok were destroyed, with toxic chemicals also spilling into its freshwater supply.
“It’s going to take years to recover from the disaster,” said Senator Lisa Murkowski.
Senator Murkowski emphasized the need for healing and ongoing work after the floodwaters recede and damage is calculated.
