The State of New Mexico will supply $30 million in emergency funding for food assistance, starting November 1, as announced by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Wednesday.
This decision comes in response to the pending stop of federal food assistance for the first 10 days of the month, due to the ongoing federal shutdown. The United States Department of Agriculture had announced that it would stop funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at the end of October.
The state's emergency funds, replenished during the October 1 special session, will be used to provide this assistance. The $30 million was added to the state's contingency fund, which the governor can spend without needing legislative approval for disaster declarations.
The agency rebuffed requests from members of Congress, including New Mexico's delegation, to use contingency funds to guarantee no pause in SNAP benefits.
