Malawi Faces Significant Hunger Response Gap
Malawi is struggling with a substantial financial shortfall in its fight against hunger, with a deficit of K148.2 billion in the Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme.
This gap threatens to disrupt emergency food aid for over 4.2 million Malawians at risk of starvation. The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has disclosed that the country requires K209.4 billion (approximately US$119 million) to implement the national hunger plan.
- The government and development partners have secured only K61.2 billion so far.
- The Food Security Cluster alone needs K168.82 billion (US$96.4 million) to feed affected households, but has received just K46 billion (US$26 million).
The country is facing a massive financial black hole in its fight against hunger.
The relief programme is set to start on November 1, leaving a narrow window to address the funding shortfall.
