Police Block Protest by Textile Workers in Lesotho

Unions accuse police of acting unlawfully by denying permission for a protest march against job losses.

National Clothing Textile and Allied Workers Union General Secretary Sam Mokhele led the coalition of trade unions at a press conference in Maseru.

“We are not satisfied with the commissioner’s response because it is not based on the law that governs processions and meetings in this country,”

said Sam Mokhele in his letter to the police minister. The coalition of unions, representing thousands of textile and garment workers, threatened court action after permission for the protest march was denied.

Author's summary: Police deny protest permit to Lesotho textile workers.
