The European Parliament has adopted a regulation to combat microplastic pollution, targeting industrial plastic granules (IPGs) used in manufacturing plastic objects.
The new regulation extends the responsibility of polluters, including carriers, and imposes strict rules for preventing and reporting incidents involving the maritime transport of IPGs.
The text, resulting from a compromise between MEPs, the European Commission, and member states, was adopted without amendments or motions of rejection.
