Rental Fraud Warning in Mariposa County
The Mariposa County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about an online rental scam requiring payment to secure a property.
According to investigators, the scam involves con artists posting homes for rent on local community Facebook pages and Facebook Marketplace, then asking interested parties to pay an application fee or security deposit upfront.
These interactions are entirely electronic, with no in-person meetings or phone conversations. Once payment is made, the scammer disappears, leaving victims without a place to rent or a way to recover their money.
The sheriff's office has received several calls regarding the fraud and is urging the public to be cautious when searching for rentals online.
