Kerr County’s Emergency Radio System Failure

The emergency radio system in Kerr County, provided by Motorola, failed in the aftermath of the July Fourth flooding.

A few years prior to the floods, local officials contracted with Motorola for a new emergency communications system, despite it being more expensive and covering less of the county than an alternative proposal from the Local Colorado River Authority.

Danny Hakim, who covered this story for The New York Times, said his team started looking into it because of reports from first responders on the ground.

As the floodwaters rose and the death count began to rise, first responders were unable to use the system.

Author's summary: Kerr County's emergency radio system failed during July flooding.
