Early Intervention Key to Hearing Health

According to Emma Scanlan, principal audiologist at Hearing Australia, stronger hearing health programs are needed in aged care homes to reduce social isolation associated with hearing loss.

Hearing loss affects around 70% of older Australians aged 70 and over, and up to 80% of those over 80. As Ms Scanlan explains, hearing loss is not just a normal part of ageing and should not be accepted as such.

It actually restricts their social opportunities to a certain extent. They also maybe feel nervous about going into new environments or environments where they can’t control the noise because of their hearing and things like that.

Hearing loss can impact communication, relationships, and mental health, causing individuals to withdraw from social activities and avoid social settings.

Author's summary: Early intervention is crucial for hearing health in older Australians.
