Practically Speaking: Examining a Potentially Expensive Requirement

Section 210.63 has the potential to be a big and expensive requirement to comply with.

The idea of requiring a 125V, 15A or 20A receptacle outlet within 25 ft of panelboards, switchboards, switchgear, and motor control centers in other than dwelling units may seem insignificant at first.

However, breaking down the requirements in Sec. 210.63 reveals that this could be a significant and potentially very expensive requirement.

These receptacles are needed for power monitoring equipment, other portable equipment, or tools.

An example of a problematic installation is shown in the photo, where the receptacle outlet is located beneath the panelboard enclosure and is fed from the same panelboard, thus not complying with the present requirement.

The installation in the photo would not comply with the present requirement because the receptacle outlet is fed from this panelboard.

Author's summary: Expensive requirement for electrical installations.
