Armenian Opposition Mayor Arrested Amid Protests

Three weeks after Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian pledged to “throw out” Vartan Ghukasian, law-enforcement authorities arrested the opposition mayor of Armenia’s second largest city of Gyumri, sparking angry protests by his supporters.

Security forces raided the Gyumri municipality building, blocking its entrances and trying to detain Ghukasian and several other local government officials.

“Join us, speak up, don’t stay silent,”

the mayor said in a social media post as hundreds of his angry supporters rallied outside the building cordoned off by police. Scores of other supporters remained inside the building, not letting law-enforcement authorities take Ghukasian away.

Ghukasian emerged from his office early in the afternoon and said he is ready to go to jail, amid the protests.
