No wolves allowed?  Montrose eyes novel approach to halt ‘non-native’ species at county line

Montrose County's Stance on Non-Native Species

A proposed ordinance in Montrose County aims to prevent the introduction of non-native species, including the Canadian gray wolf.

The ordinance, No. 2025-01, would prohibit the introduction, support, or habitat establishment of such species, with fines of up to $1,000 per day for non-compliance.

“We're introducing an apex predator into our communities and (into) an environment that literally can endanger endangered species that are federally protected,”

said Montrose County Commissioner Scott Mijares.
