Vancouver AIDS Memorial Marks 40 Years

A small stand of Sakura cherry trees in Coal Harbour serves as a memorial to those who died of AIDS.

Michael Welsh will be thinking of the countless young men lost to AIDS in the early days of the epidemic in Vancouver when he gathers at the memorial.

We were losing people every day

In 1985, Welsh and a handful of others planted the saplings in memory of four young men who had died: James, Ivan, Gino, and Randy.

A gathering will be held at the memorial to mark 40 years since the planting of the trees.
