California passes bill to include geothermal in streamlined certification program

California Expands Streamlined Certification Program to Geothermal Projects

A new bill has been signed into law in California, making geothermal projects eligible for a streamlined approval process under the California Environment Quality Act (CEQA).

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 531, sponsored by Rogers-D and Papan-D, which classifies geothermal projects as "environmental leadership development projects".

This amendment seeks to include geothermal projects in the streamlined approval process, alongside solar PV, wind power, energy storage, and hydrogen production facilities.

The bill amends Section 25545 of the Public Resources Code, allowing the Energy Commission's certification to supersede applicable statutes, ordinances, or regulations, except as specified.

Author's summary: California includes geothermal in certification program.
