A call has been made by the Meath Council of Trade Unions for a new sculpture to honour Navan's miners near the Andy Connolly Roundabout.
The existing sculpture, 'On the Great Wide Open', pays tribute to the mining industry in Navan, but according to John Regan, chairman of Meath Council of Trade Unions,
it is a “bug bearer for the miners that the current monument does not reflect the image of a current day miner”.
The sculpture was stored last January to make way for road construction and council officials will discuss its future location at a Navan Municipal Council meeting.
A new monument is sought to properly honour Navan's miners.
Author's summary: New monument for Navan miners proposed.
