Kids take the driver's seat: Roosevelt students check out Simon construction trucks at Touch-A-Truck event

Kids Take the Driver's Seat

Students at Roosevelt Elementary School in Scottsbluff got an up-close-and-personal look at big machines on Monday.

Employees from Simon, a regional construction and materials company, brought a dump truck, a loader, and a concrete mixing truck for students to check out, climb into and even honk horns.

They taught kindergarten through fifth grade students safety measures around the big equipment, including rules like not to run on work sites, the importance of protective gear like hard hats and high-visibility vests, and being patient if asked to wait behind caution tape or traffic cones.

Regional employees from Scottsbluff, Ogallala, Sterling, Cheyenne, and Chomper the T.rex, mascot for Simon, presented students with their own hard hats to wear while viewing the construction equipment.

Students learned and had fun at the Touch-A-Truck event.
