CTA Violent Crime Nears Decade High as Feds Threaten Funding Cuts

Violent crime on the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has risen to its second-highest level in the past decade, with a total of 2,893 crimes reported at CTA stations and platforms between August and July.

The arrest rate for these crimes has dropped, with fewer than 1-in-5 violent CTA crimes leading to an arrest, compared to a little over 1-in-4 for all transit crimes.

As a result, federal authorities are threatening to cut Chicago transit funding unless public safety improves. This comes as CTA plans a fare hike of 25 cents per ride and state lawmakers consider a bailout of the system and other Chicago-area mass transit.

Illinois’ comeback story starts here.
