Helena Moreno has been elected the next mayor of New Orleans, becoming the first Hispanic mayor of the city.
Moreno, currently the city council's vice president, secured 55% of the vote in the municipal primary, avoiding a runoff with her top competitors.
Moreno, 48, will be sworn in as the city's second woman mayor in January, replacing term-limited LaToya Cantrell.
LaToya Cantrell will leave office under the cloud of a federal indictment charging her with wire fraud, conspiracy, and lying to a federal grand jury.
Moreno was born in Mexico and raised in Houston, where her family moved when she was 8 years old.
