The American Legion Auxiliary's national president spent Monday volunteering at the Veterans' Community Project in Sioux Falls, helping with projects at the site.
Local leaders with Auxiliary Unit 15 presented a $28,000 donation to the veterans' nonprofit, which comes from an annual golf tournament to help fund transitional housing and services for struggling veterans.
"Veterans Community Project has been needed for so long. I wish there were more chapters of it throughout the country. We need to be able to house these homeless veterans, to give them that leg up, to be able to become self-sufficient again. We need not only the physical building, but they need the counseling, the case management, everything that goes with that,"
said American Legion Auxiliary National President Pam Ray.
