Several communities across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula faced widespread power outages on Monday afternoon. The Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) confirmed that roughly 20,000 customers were affected, with the majority of outages concentrated in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, Marquette, and Ontonagon counties.
According to UPPCO, Houghton County experienced the largest number of outages. The company linked the issue to problems in the transmission infrastructure responsible for delivering electricity to its system.
“Power has been restored,” a UPPCO update stated, noting that restoration efforts remain in progress throughout the Western Upper Peninsula.
UPPCO added that high call volumes and website traffic might lead to longer waiting times or limited access to online services. Customers are encouraged to report outages using the company’s customer portal or by emailing [email protected].
The network’s video feed is currently showing a TV6 livestream until staff can upload the related story from the broadcast. Residents can also follow updates on the TV6 YouTube channel or through the TV6+ app for live coverage of regional news and weather.
