Tech executives in one of California’s wealthiest areas near Lake Tahoe have been cautioned about possible fecal contamination in their local water system. The warning was issued for residents of Incline Village, a scenic and affluent community that is home to several Silicon Valley billionaires.
Local authorities have sent a public notice urging residents not to drink tap water unless it has been boiled. The advisory was released on Monday after the water system reportedly experienced a pressure loss that could cause backflow within the pipes.
“The community’s water system experienced an event that resulted in a loss of pressure in the distribution system, which may cause backpressure, backsiphonage, or a net movement of water from outside the pipe to the inside through cracks, breaks, or joints,” the public notice stated.
The notice also warned residents about the potential entry of harmful substances and microorganisms into the system through structure weaknesses, posing possible health hazards.
“Such a system failure carries with it a high potential that fecal contamination or other disease-causing organisms could enter the distribution system,” the document explained. “These conditions may pose an imminent and substantial health endangerment to persons served by the system.”
“DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST,”
Residents were further advised to follow safety procedures until the system is cleared and officials confirm that the water is safe to drink again.
