Canucks: Kevin Lankinen Starts Against Avalanche, Demko Possible for Jets

Kevin Lankinen will make his second consecutive start tonight for the Vancouver Canucks, facing the Colorado Avalanche at Rogers Arena. Thatcher Demko, who took part in Sunday’s morning skate, is being considered for Tuesday’s matchup against the Winnipeg Jets.

Backup duties tonight will go to Jiri Patera, recently recalled by the team, as Vancouver takes on a powerful Avalanche lineup led by Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Necas. The duo has combined for 21 goals and 42 points this season, helping Colorado maintain a 9-1-5 record following a dominant 9-1 win over the Oilers in Edmonton.

Last year, Lankinen also made back-to-back starts, stopping 23 shots in a 4-2 home loss to Montreal on March 11 and then turning away 20 in a 4-3 road victory in Calgary the following night. He enters tonight’s game following a 29-save performance during the Canucks’ 4-3 victory over Columbus on Saturday.

“Thatcher felt good, he had a good day,” head coach Adam Foote said after Sunday’s practice. “For me, it looks like he will play Tuesday, and I’ll deal with it later when you guys get mad at me if he doesn’t.”

Demko’s potential return comes as the Canucks navigate a demanding stretch of their schedule, including a three-game southeastern road trip beginning Friday in Carolina.
