On Friday night in Amherst, Massachusetts, a major fire broke out in an apartment complex serving as off-campus housing for many University of Massachusetts (UMass) students. The blaze led to the displacement of more than 200 residents.
Firefighters from across western Massachusetts responded to the three-alarm fire, which destroyed a building at 57 Olympia Drive near the UMass campus. Additionally, a building under construction on Olympia Drive was also lost to the fire.
“One four-story building that was under construction has collapsed and other nearby buildings are still burning and have partially collapsed. The fire attack has been hampered by poor water pressure in the area.”
The Amherst Fire Department acknowledged the efforts of their crews and mutual aid partners, saying,
"Crews worked tirelessly through the night — with help from our mutual aid partners — to stop the spread and protect lives."
The cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation.
The massive fire at Olympia Place in Amherst displaced over 200 residents, predominantly UMass students, with firefighters battling poor water pressure to contain one of the community's largest blazes.
