'It's a reality': Living in the shadow of younger brother Jimmy Barnes

Living in the Shadow of Younger Brother Jimmy Barnes

John Swan, known as Swanee, 73, is the older brother of famous musician Jimmy Barnes and the first to embark on a musical career in their family. He has spoken openly about his past struggles, including traumas and drug use, as well as the impact of living in Jimmy’s shadow.

“Not many people touch on it, and I think they're just polite,” Swanee said.

Despite the fame of his younger brother, Swanee has always remained close to his siblings and felt no rivalry. He shared,

“I didn't really give a stuff, because I got offered the gig before he did.”

Initially, Swanee stayed as a drummer in his band, earning only $25 a week, which he said he couldn’t afford to lose. He was surprised by the formation of Jimmy’s band with Ian Moss and Steve Prestwich.

Six months after Jimmy's band started, Swanee joined as a singer but soon realized:

“I was smart enough to realise that this band doesn't need me.”

After leaving, Swanee launched a successful solo career and joined other groups, including replacing Angry Anderson in The Party Boys. Notably, he achieved a number one hit with them.

Swanee’s journey reflects resilience and pride despite living under the shadow of a famous sibling.
