Jay Som is the project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. She will release her new album Belong on November 7.
Before the album launch, Jay Som shared "Past Lives," a track featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore. The collaborators met in Nashville to write the song together alongside Steph Marziano.
Williams’ soft harmonies on the arcing “Past Lives” enhance its melancholic tone, capturing a feeling of drifting through ups and downs and fleeting momentum. The song is powerful, with a slower midsection feeling like a confrontation with one’s inner struggles.
Duterte reflects on the collaboration:
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of ‘Float,’ I still can’t believe it happened. She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously accepts and uplifts the people around her. We’re all so lucky to witness her talent and live on the same timeline as her.”
The album Belong includes contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. For the first time, Jay Som also invited guest vocalists to participate.
Released by Polyvinyl Record Co.
