Ita, 83 years old, remains positive despite facing uncertainty after undergoing back surgery in 2021. Soon after, she noticed symptoms that led to a diagnosis of isolated gait disorder.
She shared with The Senior her experience:
"I haven't walked properly since the back surgery."Ita now relies on a wheelchair and depends on others for mobility, which she describes as one of the many adjustments she has had to make.
Despite the challenges, Ita chooses to focus on the positives, such as relief from back pain. She said,
"I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have."
Frustration remains, especially about the lack of funding for research into her condition. She reflects,
"Life is full of detours."
Ita has recently completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, which is her second memoir and the first written without having a full-time job. She found the process enjoyable:
"It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do."
Her story highlights resilience in adapting to unexpected life changes while maintaining a positive spirit.
Author's summary: Ita's journey through a debilitating condition showcases her determination to embrace life’s challenges with optimism and creativity despite physical limitations.
