A geothermal resource with temperatures exceeding 100 °C has been confirmed in Vinkovci, Croatia, following exploration drilling. The expert team recorded a maximum temperature of 131 °C at the geothermal well GT-1, located at a depth of 2,700 meters.
The high-temperature thermal waters discovered at the GT-1 well open up possibilities for district heating in the region, supporting energy independence and sustainability.
The Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency (Agencija za ugljikovodike / AZU) leads the project, with drilling operations carried out by Crosco – naftni servisi doo, part of the INA Group.
Research has confirmed what we believed from the beginning, Vinkovci and our region have enormous geothermal potential. In our underground lies the energy of the future that will allow us to no longer depend on external factors and changes in energy prices, to embark on the path of energy independence, economic resilience and a sustainable future, said Vinkovci Mayor Josip Romic on Facebook.
Drilling began in September 2025. Vinkovci is now the third site in Croatia where high-temperature geothermal resources have been confirmed, after Velika Gorica and Osijek.
Summary: The confirmation of a 131 °C geothermal resource in Vinkovci marks a significant step towards local energy resilience and sustainable district heating in Croatia.
