The Scottish director Lynne Ramsay discusses her new thriller, which stars Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. During the shoot of her fifth feature, Ramsay encountered time constraints in filming a crucial scene as natural light faded and the reversal film stock proved challenging.
In a marriage proposal scene filled with dialogue, Ramsay noticed the cinematographer lying in the grass and decided to change the approach. She directed the two leads to crawl on the grass like cats.
“They were like, ‘What the hell?’ and then they were like, ‘OK.’ It’s much more interesting than the scene I originally was going to do. Robert looked at me a few times, and was like, ‘You’re completely crazy.’ But they went with it.”
Ramsay, 55, is known for her unique vision and perfectionism. Her previous works, including Ratcatcher, Morvern Callar, and We Need to Talk About Kevin, establish her as a bold and passionate filmmaker. Despite an eight-year gap since You Were Never Really Here, her style remains fresh and dynamic.
Her ability to ask daring, animalistic actions from renowned actors like Lawrence and Pattinson is a testament to her auteur status in Hollywood.
Lynne Ramsay’s inventive directing style creates compelling and unconventional scenes, reinforcing her reputation as a fearless, perfectionist filmmaker.
