Run-Machine Marnus Labuschagne in Form of His Life Ahead of Ashes

Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne has struck his fifth century in just eight innings, sending a strong signal ahead of the Ashes. Displaying some of the finest form of his career, the Queensland captain looks revitalized after a challenging period earlier this year.

Previously left out of Australia’s mid-year Test tour of the West Indies due to a dip in performance, Labuschagne has made a fierce return. On Monday in Sydney, he scored 101 runs from 111 balls against New South Wales in a one-day fixture.

This marks the 31-year-old’s third hundred of the season in the 50-over competition, adding to his two centuries in the red-ball Sheffield Shield format. His consistency has impressed selectors and fans alike.

“The only one I can think of is probably 2019 at Glamorgan as a period of time,” Labuschagne told reporters when asked if this was his best-ever form. “But probably not across both formats. With both formats I feel like my batting is in a really nice place, just trusting my skills and trusting myself out there ... It’s all coming together.”

Labuschagne’s recent purple patch makes him a near-certain inclusion for the first Ashes Test against England in Perth on November 21, though his batting position remains uncertain. He has been performing primarily at number three, but with Australia yet to settle on an opener alongside Usman Khawaja, he could move up the order.

Australia are expected to announce their Ashes squad later this week. If Labuschagne is promoted to open, Cameron Green will likely retain the number three spot ahead of Steve Smith and Travis Head, with all-rounder Beau Webster continuing at six.

Author’s Summary:

Marnus Labuschagne’s resurgence, marked by five centuries across formats, positions him as a key player for Australia ahead of the Ashes, reflecting his regained confidence and skill.
