Vogue Williams recently shared her challenges with helping her son Theodore, aged six, with his maths homework during an episode of her podcast My Therapist Ghosted Me. She revealed how homework time has become a learning experience for her as well.
Vogue, mother to Theodore, Gigi (four), and Otto (three), described how her evenings now involve relearning school subjects alongside her children. While she manages her daughter Gigi’s homework without trouble, Theodore’s work proves to be more difficult.
“I'm back at school though because of the kids. So I'm like relearning with them for their homework. I can do Gigi's homework alright. It's Theodore's I'm struggling with a bit. I'm not even joking.”
Her honest admission resonated with many parents facing similar situations. Kelly, a mother of one, shared how she realized she had taught her four-year-old to spell incorrectly and had to relearn phonics alongside her child.
“I realised, the hard way, that I had taught my four-year-old the wrong way to spell. She brought home phonics and was teaching me!”
Jayne, another mother, expressed frustration over not being able to help her 12-year-old with maths.
“My 12-year-old was struggling with his maths and I was neither use nor ornament.”
Year one maths appears straightforward until parents try to explain it at home. The terminology and methods now used can feel unfamiliar compared to what many adults learned decades ago.
Joanne McNally, Vogue’s co-host, empathized immediately, recalling a meme about the “trauma” parents experience helping children with maths.
“We don't talk enough about the trauma of a parent sitting with their child trying to teach them maths.”
Vogue Williams’ candid talk about the challenges of supporting her son’s maths homework highlights a common struggle shared by many modern parents.
