Doha Summit Calls for Action on Social Pledges

6 November 2025 – The Second World Summit for Social Development concluded in Doha with a strong appeal for nations to move rapidly from commitments to concrete action. Delegates emphasized the need to transform the Doha Political Declaration into measurable progress on reducing poverty, promoting decent work, and advancing social inclusion.

Focus on Implementation

At the closing press conference, President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock described the event as a turning point toward practical solutions.

“Copenhagen taught us 30 years ago that social development and inclusion are essential for strong societies,” she said. “We promised to leave no one behind. Social development is not a ‘nice to have’ nor an act of charity. It is in the self-interest of every country.”

Baerbock warned that hunger and poverty today stem less from lack of resources and more from conflict, inequality, and political mismanagement.

“One of the biggest problems is not money as such. It is rather how it is invested.”

Global Participation

The summit gathered more than 40 Heads of State and Government, over 230 ministers and senior officials, and nearly 14,000 participants. In addition to formal plenary and roundtable dialogues, over 250 “solution sessions” were organized to share actionable strategies for expanding social protection, improving access to healthcare and education, and promoting dignified employment.

Author’s Summary

The Doha Summit underscored that real social progress depends on converting commitments into coordinated global action that addresses inequality, conflict, and poor resource investment.
