Senior Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson has publicly questioned Sussan Ley’s leadership as internal tensions grow within the Coalition over the party’s net zero stance.
The Liberals have faced mounting pressure to clarify whether they will align with the Nationals, who recently backed away from the net zero policy. A partyroom meeting is scheduled for Sunday, November 16, where the Coalition is expected to confirm its final position.
Speaking with Sky News Australia’s Peter Stefanovic, Senator Henderson, a known critic of the net zero plan, said Ley’s leadership is increasingly under strain.
“I cannot support the way things are,” she said.
“I can’t pretend things are good. We’ve had a dire Newspoll result, a primary vote of just 24 per cent. Things are not traveling well.”
When asked about Ley’s current standing, Henderson admitted she believes support is slipping but remained cautiously optimistic about the party’s future.
“I do have to say, really honestly, I do think Sussan is losing support, but I do believe in miracles—we can turn things around.”
The upcoming meeting is expected to be decisive for both Sussan Ley’s leadership and the Liberal Party’s climate policy direction, as members prepare for intense internal debate.
