Latest on David Kampf

Veteran center David Kampf has temporarily stepped away from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies to reassess his career plans. Earlier this offseason, the Toronto Maple Leafs explored trade options for Kampf, but no deal materialized. As a result, he was placed on waivers during training camp and, after clearing, assigned to the Marlies.

Just over two years ago, general manager Brad Treliving signed the 30-year-old to a four-year, $9.6 million contract. The expectation was that Kampf would continue as a steady fourth-line center and a key contributor on faceoffs and penalty kills. However, his ice time was reduced under coach Craig Berube, while less expensive players took over his roster spot.

This season, Kampf has dressed for only four of the Marlies’ seven games and did not play during the team’s road trip to Chicago.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Kampf is taking a few days to consider his future in hockey.

In recent seasons, several players have chosen to leave guaranteed contracts to find roles elsewhere in the NHL or to return to play at that level. Examples include Conor Sheary, Brandon Saad, and Filip Zadina. Kampf could be weighing a comparable decision, although leaving now would mean forfeiting more than $3 million in remaining salary and bonus payments through next season.

Author’s Summary
