Michael Giacchino Scrapped And Rewrote ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Score Before It Hit Cinemas – Sound & Screen Film

Michael Giacchino Rewrote the Score for "Fantastic Four: First Steps"

Composer Michael Giacchino revealed that his entire original score for The Fantastic Four: First Steps was discarded and rewritten before the film reached theaters. This movie marks Giacchino’s seventh collaboration with Marvel, following his work on Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Werewolf By Night, which he also directed.

Two Versions of the Score

Speaking at Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Film event, Giacchino shared that he composed two complete scores for the project.

“I actually wrote a whole other score for this film that you probably won’t ever hear,” Giacchino said. “I just remember seeing it for the first time with the music and something didn’t feel right.”

He began composing before principal photography even started, after being approached by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige to create music for the film’s Comic-Con reveal.

Early Themes and Collaboration

By the time production began, Giacchino had already written themes for Galactus and the Silver Surfer. He noted how the film’s director, Matt Shakman, used that early music to guide the mood on set.

“What was really fun was Matt took that to the set,” Giacchino said. “It helped everyone understand the tone of the movie we were making. I think filmmakers should hire the composer first to set the creative direction from day one.”

Evolving Vision and Final Cut

As production continued, the film evolved significantly. When Giacchino watched the final cut, he realized his first score no longer matched the film’s tone.

“Musically, when I’m writing, I like to start at the beginning and go through the end,” he said.

Author’s Summary

Michael Giacchino ultimately rewrote the entire score for Fantastic Four: First Steps after realizing that his original compositions no longer aligned with the evolving vision of the film.
