Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux says he's resigning from the House

Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux Announces Resignation from Parliament

Edmonton Member of Parliament Matt Jeneroux has declared his decision to step down from the House of Commons. His departure could influence the balance of power, potentially making it easier for the Liberals to advance their budget without relying on other parties.

On Thursday, Jeneroux shared a letter confirming his resignation but did not specify his reasons for leaving federal politics. The exact date of his resignation remains uncertain, as well as whether he will participate in upcoming votes connected to the budget.

“I wanted one last opportunity to address the House,” Jeneroux said.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre later noted on social media that Jeneroux intended to resign in the spring. This follows speculation that Jeneroux might join the Liberals after Chris d’Entremont crossed the floor earlier in the week.

Jeneroux did not vote in-person or virtually on the Conservative subamendment to the budget motion on Thursday night. The measure was defeated as the Liberals, Bloc Québécois, NDP, and Green Leader Elizabeth May voted against it. The next round of votes, including the Bloc amendment, is expected on Friday, followed by the main budget motion in November.

Once Jeneroux’s resignation takes effect, the Conservatives would hold 142 seats in the House of Commons, compared with 22 for the Bloc Québécois, seven for the NDP, and one for the Greens.
