Maple Leafs' David Kampf Away from Team, Considering Future After AHL Demotion

Toronto Maple Leafs center David Kampf is currently away from the organization as he evaluates his next steps following a stint in the AHL to open the season.

Early Season Setback

The 30-year-old forward was placed on waivers at the start of the season and subsequently assigned to the Toronto Marlies. During his short spell in the AHL, Kampf appeared in four games and registered one assist.

Possible Resolution Ahead

“They’ve got a lot of forwards up and down the organization, and one whose status has been a little bit unclear in the last week is David Kampf,” said TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston. “He’s been away from the Toronto Marlies, pondering his future, what he wants to do next. I’m told that could be coming to a resolution by this weekend. Could even see Kampf rejoin the Marlies. We’ll see what happens there.”

Contract and Career Background

Kampf is in the third year of a four-year, $9.6 million contract that carries an average annual value of $2.4 million. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Blackhawks in May 2017, he played four seasons there before joining the Maple Leafs in 2021.

After consistent performances in his first two seasons in Toronto, posting 26 and 27 points respectively, Kampf signed a four-year extension in June 2023.

Recent Struggles

During the 2024–25 season, under new head coach Craig Berube, Kampf had difficulty finding his rhythm. In 59 games, he recorded five goals and 13 points while averaging a career-low 12 minutes and 24 seconds of ice time.

Author’s Summary

Kampf’s uncertain pause reflects a crossroads in his career as he weighs his future amid struggles and reduced playing time with the Maple Leafs.
