UTSA started its football program from the ground up. After a practice year in 2010, the team played its first official season as an FCS Independent in 2011 before joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2012. In 2013, UTSA transitioned into Conference USA and officially became an FBS member in 2014.

The Roadrunners made an immediate impact, setting modern NCAA startup records in 2011 by drawing 56,743 fans to their first game against Northeastern State and averaging 35,521 fans over six home games.
