A weather system moving into the region, mainly bringing rain, is forecast to deliver the season’s first snowflakes as temperatures fall into the 30s, officials said.

“It’s not a big deal,” said Birk, “But there might be slushy grass and walkways with less than an inch of flakes.”

Temperatures are predicted to reach the high 50s on Thursday, with showers and thunderstorms possible overnight continuing into Friday. Saturday will likely bring rain in the afternoon, mostly cloudy skies, and a high near 50 degrees.

Before 3 a.m., temperatures could drop to around 35 degrees, allowing a mix of rain and snow to occur. Forecasters indicated a 90% chance of precipitation on Saturday.

Currently, O’Hare and Midway airports report partly cloudy skies with temperatures near 55 degrees. Winds will range from 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph Thursday overnight. Showers and possible thunderstorms are expected between midnight and 3 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Wind gusts are forecast to strengthen overnight as a 90% chance of showers occurs. Lake effect snow is possible from Sunday night through Monday night, with temperatures remaining in the 30-degree range.
