Chicago Weather: First Snowflakes of the Season Expected This Weekend

A developing storm system will move into the Chicago area late Thursday night, bringing rain through early Friday morning. Meteorologist Emily Wahls provides the forecast update.

Most locations will see up to a quarter inch of rain before skies begin to clear by daybreak. Friday will feature partly sunny conditions with highs in the lower 60s. Winds from the west may gust up to 30 mph, making for breezy but mild weather — a brief chance to enjoy the warmth before temperatures tumble.

Weekend Temperature Drop and Rain-to-Snow Transition

By Saturday, the weather changes sharply. Highs will only reach the upper 40s to near 50 degrees. Rain is expected to move in by late morning or midday, lingering through the afternoon and evening.

As temperatures fall into the 30s later Saturday evening, that rain could briefly mix with or change to snow. While accumulations should remain minimal, grassy and elevated areas could become slightly slushy.

Colder Air Settling In

Sunday and Monday will be much colder, with daytime highs only in the 30s. Lake effect snow showers are possible both days, but the exact timing and location remain uncertain.

As of now, most of the snow activity is expected in Northwest Indiana, though some mixed rain and snow could reach Northeast Illinois if winds shift from the northeast.

Midweek Warm-Up Ahead

Warmer air is forecast to return on Tuesday and Wednesday, gradually lifting temperatures into more seasonal levels after the weekend chill.

Author’s summary: Chicago will experience a sharp weekend cooldown with rain possibly turning to light snow before a gradual midweek warm-up returns.
