Multiple people became ill at Joint Base Andrews, a US military facility near Washington, following the arrival and opening of a suspicious package containing an unknown white powder.

The package was opened in one of the base buildings, which also houses the Air National Guard Readiness Center. After exposure, several individuals reportedly fell ill and were taken to the on-base Malcolm Grove Medical Center.

“As a precaution, the building and connecting building (at the base) were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,” Joint Base Andrews stated.

The affected building was evacuated and secured to ensure safety. First responders were dispatched quickly and later handed the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations.

“Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and have turned the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations. An investigation is currently ongoing,” CNN cited the military base.
