Jim Belushi reveals what it was really like to watch his brother John get into ‘Blues Brothers’ role

Jim Belushi Reflects on Watching His Brother John Become 'Blues Brothers'

Jim Belushi recently shared his favorite memory from his early Hollywood career, highlighting a special moment with his late brother, John Belushi. John became a comedy icon as one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live in 1975. Alongside fellow SNL star Dan Aykroyd, he co-created The Blues Brothers, evolving the act into a renowned blues and soul music band.

The Rise of The Blues Brothers

The Blues Brothers first appeared on SNL as musical guests in April 1978. The project quickly gained momentum, and by September of that year, they were opening for Steve Martin during his shows at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles.

“I’ll tell you what I loved: I loved going to the Universal Amphitheater when they came to LA and they opened for Steve Martin,” Jim, 71, said. “And John was so, so magnificent. I loved that moment, to see my brother just hit the top of his chart.”

John Belushi’s Legacy and Jim’s Role

Tragically, John died from a suspected drug overdose on March 5, 1982, just two years after that performance. Following John’s passing, Jim Belushi stepped into his brother’s shoes as "Zee Blues," performing alongside Aykroyd’s "Elwood," at Aykroyd’s urging.
