Simu Liu Calls ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ a Love Letter to Superhero Movies

Simu Liu will return as Shang-Chi in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, slated for release in 2026. In a recent interview, Liu discussed the experience of reuniting with fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) actors and shared his excitement about the film directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.

“There are just so many actors in it, and getting to work with those people as peers is really incredible because I grew up watching so many of them,” said Liu to ScreenRant.

The actor will share the screen with Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Vanessa Kirby (Susan Storm), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), and Florence Pugh (Yelena), among others.

“It feels, in a lot of ways, like a love letter to the entire genre of superhero movies. And I think there’s something really fun about that,” Liu added.

“The film is for all the misfits, weirdos, and underdogs who grew up reading comic books and found hope in them — that it didn’t matter if they didn’t fit in. There’s always been a special place in my heart for that genre.”

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. The Russo brothers are directing the movie from a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely.
