South Carolina native Craig Melvin has returned to his hometown of Columbia to film a special segment for the “Today” show. The feature, airing Thursday, celebrates the Midlands region and highlights the people and places that influenced Melvin’s early life.
“Welcome to my hometown, Columbia, S.C.,” Melvin says in the video. “Join me for a little trip down memory lane. I’m going to bring you back here to my childhood with my kid brother, introduce you to some of my favorite people and places that really sort of shaped me, molded me. And of course, there will be food.”
The preview, shared Wednesday on WIS’s Facebook page, shows Melvin in the newly renovated Finlay Park. The video follows him as he visits local restaurants, steps into a barbershop, and chats with Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, who was recently re-elected.
Melvin’s return marks nearly a year since he became co-host of NBC’s “Today” show, succeeding Hoda Kotb. Before joining NBC News, where he spent 13 years, Melvin began his broadcasting career at WIS — Columbia’s NBC affiliate — while still a student at Columbia High School, later anchoring the station’s nightly news.
Even from his national platform, Melvin continues to spotlight his South Carolina roots, and his latest visit brings that connection back to where it all began.
