Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will not join the team for their upcoming five-game road trip starting Saturday as he recovers from right-side sciatica, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
Charania reported that James' next step in rehabilitation involves participating in 5-on-5 live play, which might occur against G League players or after the team's return from the road trip in November. Lakers staff continue to expect James to return around mid-November.
The Lakers disclosed in September that James was suffering from nerve irritation in his glute, sidelining him during the preseason. Subsequently, the team confirmed he would miss the season opener against the Golden State Warriors due to sciatica on his right side.
“James will debut around mid-November,” reported Charania.
Without James, the Lakers have started the season with a strong 6-2 record. Despite being the oldest player in the NBA at 41 years old, James has remained remarkably durable, playing 71 games two seasons ago and 70 games in the 2024-25 season, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game.
Minor injuries are expected at James' age, and this sciatica issue marks an early injury challenge this season. Fortunately, the Lakers rely heavily on star Luka Dončić, reducing the pressure on James during his recovery.
LeBron James will miss the Lakers’ upcoming road trip due to sciatica but is expected to return in mid-November, while the team sustains strong performance without him.
