AZ suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Premier League side Crystal Palace on Thursday evening in the UEFA Conference League. Despite the scoreline, luck prevented Palace from scoring even more goals at Selhorst Park.
Palace, who qualified for the competition by winning the English FA Cup, created their first opportunity in the 11th minute. Chris Richards headed a long ball back into the box, which Ismaila Sarr controlled on his chest before his volley hit the post.
Shortly after, the home team was awarded a penalty. A through ball by Yeremy Pino found Sarr, who was fouled by Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro. Jean-Philippe Mateta stepped up for the spot kick but his shot was saved by Owusu-Oduro.
Following the missed penalty, Crystal Palace intensified their attack. Owusu-Oduro made an excellent save from a Sarr header, and Will Hughes fired a volley that struck the crossbar moments later.
The persistent pressure paid off when a long ball into the box was nodded down by Sarr to center-back Maxime Lacroix, who fired a low, powerful volley into the corner to open the scoring.
AZ tested Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson just before halftime when Sven Mijnans unleashed a strong shot from outside the area, which Henderson managed to push away to safety.
"Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has a good record from penalties, saw his effort saved by Owusu-Oduro."
Moments later, Palace doubled their lead, further asserting control over the match.
Crystal Palace dominated AZ with clinical finishing and relentless pressure, securing a convincing 3-1 victory that showcased their strength in European competition.
