A full-scale reproduction of the Spitfire MK IX will serve as a powerful tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who have participated in conflicts past and present during this year's Remembrance Sunday.
The hand-crafted aircraft will be showcased in Millennium Place, Durham City, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, 9 November 2025. This unique display has been organized with the help of Simply Spitfire, whose meticulous reproduction captures the spirit of the original wartime fighter.
As 2025 marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War and 85 years since the Battle of Britain, Durham County Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Andrew Harrison, sought to commemorate these historic milestones in a meaningful way. With the support of Squadron Leader (Retired) James A. Cowan MBE and Simply Spitfire, the council arranged for the aircraft’s appearance as a heartfelt tribute.
“The Spitfire stands as a lasting symbol of bravery, resilience, and remembrance,” said Cllr Harrison.
The display will also form part of the route for Durham City’s annual Remembrance Parade, held from 10:00 a.m. to noon that same morning.
This year’s Remembrance Sunday in Durham will feature a full-size replica Spitfire, honoring the courage of those who served and marking key wartime anniversaries.
