RSL Victoria is urging people to buy a red poppy as Remembrance Day approaches. On Monday, 11 November 2024, the anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I fighting with Germany in 1918 will be observed. Every year, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, millions around the world pause to remember.
Commemorations will take place at 11 a.m. in Ararat, Willaura, and Lake Bolac. These communities will hold services to honor those who served and sacrificed.
The red poppy, known as the "Flower of Remembrance," first blossomed on the battlefields of northern France and Belgium after World War I. Australia adopted it in 1921 to pay tribute to the fallen and support survivors.
"The poppy is known as the ‘Flower of Remembrance’, as they were among the first to flower in the battlefields of northern France and Belgium after the conflict ended."
