Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone Developing ‘Miss Piggy’ Movie With ‘Oh, Mary’ Tony-Winner Cole Escola

Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone Developing "Miss Piggy" Movie with Cole Escola

Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Tony Award winner Cole Escola are teaming up to bring Miss Piggy to the big screen. The film, currently in early development at Disney, will focus on the legendary puppet diva originally created by Jim Henson for “The Muppet Show” in the 1970s.

Though Miss Piggy has long been a pop culture icon, this marks the first time she will headline her own feature film. Lawrence and Stone will produce, while Escola, celebrated for their Broadway play “Oh, Mary!,” will write the screenplay.

“I don’t know if I can announce this but I am just going to… Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it,”

When hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers reacted with excitement, they asked whether Lawrence and Stone planned to appear in the movie together. Lawrence replied playfully:

“I think so. We have to… It’s messed up that we haven’t done a movie together.”

Appearing later on “The Tonight Show,” Lawrence explained that the project’s inspiration came from a pandemic-era conversation about celebrity culture and public backlash.

“She said, ‘Miss Piggy is a feminist icon. It would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled,’” Lawrence recalled. “Now that is not the plot necessarily, but it got the wheels turning.”
