Customers are being warned to return certain tomato sauce jars for a full refund following a serious health risk. First and Last Bakery, LLC, based in Connecticut, has recalled three popular tomato-based pasta sauces over concerns of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for life-threatening food poisoning.
The sauces were distributed primarily in Connecticut and Massachusetts, including through Big Y stores and possibly other retailers, starting from September 22, 2025. All recalled jars carry a use-by date of September 26.
Botulism is a severe illness caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. These toxins attack the nervous system, potentially causing paralysis.
The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) stated that the sauces were "manufactured without an adequately evaluated production process to prevent the formation of the dangerous bacterium."
The issue arises when acidified or low-acid canned foods are not processed correctly, allowing the bacteria to develop and produce harmful toxins.
Although no cases of illness have been reported yet, the extreme danger posed by botulism means customers should immediately stop using the sauces and return them for a refund.
First and Last Bakery, LLC, and the FDA are actively managing the recall to protect consumer safety amid this contamination risk.
"Clostridium botulinum bacteria can be formed when acidified or low-acid canned foods aren’t properly processed."
Author’s summary: A recall has been issued for three tomato sauces due to botulism risk, urging consumers to return the products immediately to avoid life-threatening poisoning.
