The Royal Canadian Mint has issued a new $2 circulation coin just in time for Remembrance Day, honoring Canada’s Unknown Soldier. This colorized coin marks the 25th anniversary of the repatriation of Canada’s Unknown Soldier.

Design and Significance

Canadian artist Mary-Ann Liu, who also designed Canada’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa, created this commemorative coin. It symbolizes the tribute to the unidentified soldier from World War I.

Historical Background

On May 23, 2000, a Canadian Forces aircraft carried the Unknown Soldier from France back to Canada.
The soldier was chosen by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission from the Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery near Vimy Ridge, site of an important Canadian battle during the First World War.
During a ceremony at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, the Commission officially handed over the soldier’s remains to Canada.
A Canadian delegation then transported the casket with the remains back to Ottawa.
On May 25, 2000, the remains were taken to Parliament and placed in the Hall of Honour in the Centre Block.

Final Ceremony

In a ceremony broadcast nationally, the Unknown Soldier was laid to rest in a specially designed sarcophagus before the National War Memorial.

This coin not only commemorates a historical moment but also continues to honor the sacrifices of Canada's fallen soldiers through national remembrance.
